ABOUT THE PROJECT
WHY TRANS LINGUISTICS?
Trans and nonbinary people often think critically about language, developing creative and innovative strategies for expressing their identities and navigating the social world. Work within trans linguistics recognizes the ways language is used to challenge, critique, construct and reproduce social structures.
The project is centered in both academic and community-based work to explore and document language use among transgender and nonbinary North Carolinians. This includes documenting the voices, linguistic practices, and language ideologies of trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals across the state.
